How do I add my child's weekly spelling list?
There are four ways to import a spelling list:
- Photo: Take a photo of the printed spelling list and SpellStar will read the words automatically
- Type: Enter the words manually
- Share code: Enter a code shared by a teacher or another parent
- QR code: Scan a QR code generated by the teacher's classroom mode
What age range is SpellStar for?
SpellStar is designed for UK primary school children aged 4–11, covering Reception through Year 6. The word lists are aligned with the Department for Education statutory spelling lists.
Does the app need an internet connection?
No. SpellStar works entirely offline. Spelling lists, progress, and all other data are stored on the device only.
Does SpellStar collect any data about my child?
No data leaves the device. SpellStar stores your child's first name, school year, and learning progress locally on the device only. Nothing is sent to any server. See our privacy policy for full details.
What is the parent PIN for?
The PIN protects the parent and settings area of the app. Only someone with the PIN can view progress reports, manage profiles, or change app settings. The PIN is stored securely as a hash on the device.
I have forgotten the parent PIN. What do I do?
You can reset the PIN from the app's settings screen using the "Forgot PIN" option. This will require you to set a new PIN. Your child's progress data will not be affected.
What is included in the free tier?
The free tier includes the Spell Cast game mode with full access to all curriculum word lists. Paid tiers (from £3.49/month) unlock all 13 game modes, classroom features, and detailed progress reports.
How do I restore my subscription on a new device?
Open the app and go to the parent area. Tap "Restore Purchases" and sign in with the same Apple ID you used for the original subscription. Note that spelling lists and progress data are stored on-device only and cannot be transferred between devices.
The app is not loading or is crashing.
Try the following steps:
- Make sure your device is running the latest version of iOS
- Check the App Store for any available updates to SpellStar
- Close the app completely and reopen it
- Restart your device
- If the problem persists, uninstall and reinstall the app (your subscription can be restored, but on-device data will be lost)
I am a teacher. How does classroom mode work?
Classroom mode lets you create spelling lists and generate share codes or QR codes that students (or their parents) can use to import the list into their own copy of SpellStar. No accounts or sign-ups are needed — it works entirely through codes.
